What is the active ingredient of FRONTLINE and what type of compound is it?   FRONTLINE contains fipronil, which is the first of a totally new family of molecules called the phenylpyrazoles. (It is not an organophosphorus compound).

How quickly does FRONTLINE kill fleas and ticks?

FRONTLINE Spot on kills 98% of fleas within 8 hours and 100% within 24 hours. Any newly arriving fleas from the environment will be killed within 24 hours, before they lay eggs. FRONTLINE Spot on kills more than 90% of ticks within 24-48 hours, minimising the risk of diseases transmitted by ticks.

Do fleas and ticks have to bite my pet for FRONTLINE to work?   No. FRONTLINE will kill your pet's fleas and ticks when they come into contact with your pet's coat within the time periods mentioned above.

How soon after treatment can my pet be handled?

As soon as the coat is dry. It is recommended that animals are treated in the early evening and not allowed to sleep with their owners especially children.

How does FRONTLINE Spot On spread on the skin?

After application to the surface of the skin, the active ingredient (fipronil) dissolves in the sebum which is the natural oils covering the hair and skin. It then spreads to all areas of the body surface within 24 hours of application in 2 ways: It moves down a concentration gradient (osmolarity) from the point of application within the sebum. The normal body movement of the animal acts to encourage the spread across the skin.

How does FRONTLINE remain on the coat of the pet for so long?

After application of FRONTLINE, the alcohol carrier evaporates leaving the active ingredient fipronil, dissolved in the sebum covering the hair and skin. Fipronil then concentrates in the sebaceous glands in the skin which supply the natural oils that help to condition the skin and coat of cats and dogs. The sebaceous glands act as a reservoir which continues to supply the coat and skin with sebum and dissolved fipronil and helps to explain why FRONTLINE continues to work for so long even after bathing and shampooing.

How long will FRONTLINE last?

Spot On : for approx. 2 months in dogs and up to 5 weeks in cats FRONTLINE  and Spot On may be used monthly if the pet has a serious flea problem. Ticks Spot On need to be applied monthly.

Why does FRONTLINE work for longer against fleas in dogs than cats ?

Several factors may be involved including differences in sebum secretion and the differences in grooming behaviour between cats and dogs.

Can FRONTLINE be reapplied more frequently than a monthly treatment interval?

FRONTLINE products do not need to be applied more than recommended.

How safe is FRONTLINE?

As with all prescription only veterinary products, FRONTLINE has undergone exhaustive evaluation in both safety and efficacy prior to its registration and is continually assessed by in-market monitoring. It has been shown to have an excellent safety profile in cats and dogs reinforced by more than 500 million treatments world-wide by the end of 2001.

Is FRONTLINE an organophosphate compound?

FRONTLINE is a member of the phenylpyrazole family of molecules, which are not related to organophosphate compounds.

What if my pet licks his coat following application with FRONTLINE?   FRONTLINE has very high safety profile in cats and dogs. However the alcohol base may cause some transient salivation if the application site is licked before the product has dried.
