Magnesium Oxide Calmer  1kg

Product Details

Magnesium oxide has a plethora of equine uses. Magnesium is a useful supplement to help your horse remain calm and has some merits in slowing the absorption of sugars in the digestive system. It is vital for the nervous and muscular system to work correctly.  Often over weight horses have a lower magnesium level as do native breeds. During periods of stress there is an elevated need for magnesium and there is evidence of helping to combat fat deposition. As with any supplement, magnesium oxide should be introduced gradually into the diet. Watch out for any signs of loose droppings as excessive levels of magnesium in the diet may have a laxative effect. Our magnesium is supplied by the same supplier of all our herbs and is of high quality. Comes in a fine powder form 1KG

Feeding Guide: 2gm per 100kg of body weight A 1kg pack will last a 500kg horse 100 days

What can cause magnesium deficiencies?

Magnesium is lost quite easily through sweat, urine and stress situations. Also when pasture management is poor grazing can lead to deficiencies. Spring grass that is so popular with horses can be low in magnesium without correct pasture management, this may lead to the grazing becoming a poor source for magnesium.

Why supplement with magnesium?

Magnesium oxide is often used as a calming supplement, because deficiency symptoms include nervousness and impaired muscle function. Supplementation encourages calmness and relaxation. Magnesium oxide may not only help your horse remain calm but is also regarded as possibly helping to slow down the absorption of sugars in the digestive system. Magnesium is vital for the nervous and muscular system of the horse to work correctly as well as bone structure, enzyme activation, and energy metabolism.

When should I supplement with magnesium oxide?

The most easily absorbed supplement for horses is magnesium oxide however it should not be considered as a miracle cure or even a necessary supplement. It can certainly help in situations when horses are introduced to new grass or when the flush of grass causes an increased sugar content in the grass. It should not be expected to be used in place of sensible grazing management or overall health plan for horses. Magnesium levels can be short in some horse diets, and its absorption is affected by other minerals. High levels of other minerals can inhibit the availability of magnesium thereby necessitating supplementation.

Magnesium supplementation has been advised by veterinary surgeons with excellent results both in America and the UK. The supplementation serves not only to re-balance diets in low magnesium or high in cereal, but also to help in combating fat deposition in overweight animals (cresty necks). Particularly important for laminitics, magnesium oxide can aid weight loss where necessary for the protection of body tissues and also to maintain circulation. Magnesium is also often used to help tense, nervous, highly strung animals due to its involvement in the function of excitable membranes.
