Why are Chia Seeds so beneficial to your horse?

Chia seeds are a natural, organically-grown horse supplement used for providing essentials omega-3 fatty acids, antioxidants, fibre, vitamins and minerals. Chia seeds are easy to feed, easy to digest and most importantly great for your horse.

Omega 3

Chia seeds contain the right balance between alpha linolenic acid (ALA), an omega-3 and linoleic acid, an omega-6 similar to that found in living healthy grass. Without access to fresh grass your horse relies on supplemented fat which generally comes from vegetable oil which is very high in omega-6. too many omega-6s increase inflammation. The high level of omega-3 found in Chia seeds has the opposite effect- they decrease inflammation.

Protein and fibre

Chia seeds contain approximately 20% quality protein which benefits muscles, bones, joint, skin, hooves, lungs, liver, kidneys and blood.

Mucilages, gums and pectins are water soluble fibres found in Chia seeds.

These form a gel in water helping to reduce the incidence of sand colic, lower circulating insulin by reducing glucose absorption and reduce pain and inflammation associated with gastric ulcers

Antioxidants known as chlorogenic acid, caffeic acid, myriectin and quercetin naturally occur within Chia seeds to protect their fatty acids from rancidity. Inside your horses body they act to neutralize damaging free radicals, thereby reducing pain, inflammation and vulnerability towards disease.

Chia seeds are low in non-structural carbohydrates which support horses that may be suffering from insulin resistance or equine cushing disease (otherwise know as PPID). The omega-3s and antioxidants offered by chia seeds reduce free radical formation, resulting in the reduction of the severity of the diease.

How much to feed

·         Offer Chia Seeds to your horse 5 days per week

·         Feed 60gms of Chia for each horse on pasture or maintenance

·         Feed 120gms of each horse on dry lot or stalled with hay

·         Feed 120gms for young, growing, pregnant horses, seniors rehabilitating and competition horses

·         For ponies, minis, donkeys and mules reduce the above dosage to 1/3rd due to their intolerance to high levels of fat

Chia seeds may be fed dry, top dressed on a meal, or soaked ahead of time mixed in with other ingredients.

Including Chia seeds in your horse’s diet is an excellent way to enhance your horses health. Chia is easy to feed, has a long shelf life and more importantly brings healing to inflammatory conditions, allergies and illness
